UAP Faculty Leads Exciting Summer Semester at Virginia Tech's Center in Switzerland

UAP faculty Heike Mayer led this year's 3 three week summer course at Virginia Tech’s Center for European Studies and Architecture (CESA) in Riva Switzerland. A total of 18 students participated, including 12 from Virginia Tech and 6 from the Universities of Wuerzburg (Germany) and Bern (Switzerland). Students enjoyed the classroom sessions in the beautiful Ticcino area in southern Switzerland, as well as the opportunity to get to know the local culture and customs. Two of the many highlights of the course were the trips to the Green City Freiburg und die Slow City Waldkirch. The final report and a blog about this exciting summer course can be accessed online.

In summer 2010, Professors Kris Wernstedt and Sonia Hirt will lead the Riva program. The course will focus on contrasting European and American urban development patterns and urban policies--at local, regional, national, and international levels--and on differences in environmental policy and planning between Europe and the US.
