VT-NCR Commencement Ceremony


It's time to start collecting photos for this years slide show for the NCR Commencement ceremony. If you have photos from the 2016-17 academic year of a Virginia Tech class, professor, event or gathering that you would like to share, please send them to Susan Merten ( by April 15, 2017.

Commencement Speaker: Mehul Sanghani, founder and chief executive officer of Octo Consulting Group, an award-winning provider of mission-critical technology and digital services to the federal marketplace.

Alumni Speaker: Justin Graves, founder and owner of HESONWHEELS, and Program Analyst/Project Manager at the Department of Homeland Security


Parking is free in Lot K. There is also garage parking adjacent to the Concert Hall at the Mason Pond Parking Deck. Daily Rates are subject to change for special events.


Although tickets are not required for Commencement ceremonies, there is limited seating.


PhDs: The hoods for the Doctor of Philosophy will be edged with dark blue. Doctoral gowns are faced with black velvet with three bars across the sleeves. Tassels for doctoral students are gold.

Masters: The colors for the edging of hoods for master's students are determined by the college and discipline granting the degree, as listed in the table below. The tassels of caps for Master's students are black.

To order your academic regalia, please contact the Virginia Tech Bookstore. All orders are encouraged by April 15th, in order to receive items on time.

Doctoral candidates participating in the commencement ceremony will receive their diplomas on stage. All other doctoral candidates and master's degree and certificate recipients will receive their diplomas by mail. Please ensure that your address is updated in HOKIESPA.

These dates appear on the diploma for qualified graduates. The added degree-conferring dates fall on the last day of final examinations of First Summer Term and Second Summer Term. See Degree-Conferring Dates for a full list. No commencement ceremonies are conducted during the summer. Students who complete degree requirements at these times may attend the next commencement, but they are requested to notify the Graduate School. All degrees conferred between commencements are listed in the commencement program for the following commencement. Diplomas for graduates will be mailed directly to the student.


Graduate Eligibility - Graduate students must show degree application status or we need verification from an advisor that you will complete your degree within the year of the ring year request. Please include name of advisor with application request.

Commencement photographs will be taken by Gradimages. Students interested in purchasing photos will have the opportunity to fill out the back of their student cards at Commencement with contact info for Gradimages.

This year the VT NCR Commencement ceremony will be photographed by GradImages. As part of their contract with Virginia Tech, they will offer Cap and Gown, and business portraits for graduating students. Their professional photographer will be at the Northern Virginia Center on May 10, 2017 from 4:30pm to 8:30pm in Room 103. Please bring your own regalia or business attire for the sitting. Although no appointment is necessary, if you preregister, you will receive a 20% discount on orders of $50 (

The Commencement video will be taken by Donnie Gray and his team at Gray Area Photography and Video. Following the Commencement, information will be emailed to graduates on how to access the video on the Virginia Tech site at


Back by popular demand, students will be able to pose for free fun booth photos with Photo in a Box! Free downloads will be available after the event.
