Secondary Math/Science Education

Virginia Tech offers Master’s degrees in Math and Science Education Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) for professionals interested in degree programs in Math Education and/or Science Education. These are cohort-based programs designed with flexibility for individual needs and schedules in Biology and Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, and Math.  There are three variations most often pursued by students:

  • Master’s Degree and Teacher Licensure for prospective teachers – for career switchers and continuing students, a 42-credit program with student teaching internships;
  • Master’s Degree and Licensure for practicing unlicensed teachers - a 30-credit program built around a current teaching position in a public or private school; or
  • Master’s Degree only – for licensed teachers, other educators, consultants, naturalists, tutors, trainers, etc.

The Virginia Tech Program

Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church has developed a graduate program in math and science teaching designed to train and certify teachers in these vital areas with a special emphais on technology. If you hold a bachelor's degree in math, science or a related discipline, Virginia Tech's program can provide you with the certification and knowledge needed to teach math or science to students in grades 6-12. You will develop and practice cutting edge teaching techniques on-site in local middle and high schools through student teaching and other field experiences. You will also benefit from clinical and laboratory courses taught by Virginia Tech's full time faculty. Graduates of the program will receive a master of arts degree and be granted a Virginia teacher's license to teach math or science in grades 6-12.

Program Information

Today's information age economy requires that middle school and high school students attain a solid background in math, science, and the use of technology. School districts throughout the region are, however, reporting a critical shortage of teachers skilled in these important areas. This shortage promises to become even more acute as an increasing number of college graduates in math and science enter private sector technology careers and current math and science teachers begin to retire. As a result, the demand for those specializing in math and science teaching will escalate over the coming decade. In fact, U.S. News & Report recently rated math and science teaching as one of the nation's 20 hottest job tracks for the future.
