Eric E. McCollum, Ph.D.

Dr. McCollum has worked in a variety of clinical settings prior to his entry into academia. He was a staff social worker at the Polk County Community Mental Health Center in Des Moines, IA for two years, completed a one-year post-graduate residency in psychiatric social work at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS., and subsequently worked as a clinician at Menninger for 11 years.

In 1989, Dr. McCollum accepted a faculty position in the COAMFTE accredited doctoral program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Purdue University. While there, he taught and supervised masters and doctoral students.

Dr. McCollum came to Virginia Tech in 1992. In addition to teaching courses, he serves as the Program Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program.

Dr. McCollum's primary research interest is substance abuse treatment. He has conducting numerous research projects to develop and test a couples treatment model for female substance abusers. One project, a 5-year NIDA-funded study, was carried out in Phoenix, AZ while others have been conducted in Seattle, WA. Dr. McCollum is also currently involved in a research project with Drs. Stith and Rosen to develop and test a couples treatment model for domestic violence. Dr. McCollum is the co-author of a recently published book, " Family Solutions for Substance Abuse: Clinical and Counseling Approaches". He has also authored over 40 book chapters and articles published in a variety of journals including Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, Family Process, The American Journal of Family Therapy, Contemporary Family Therapy, and Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, Journal of Family Psychotherapy, and the Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy as well as a book editor for the Psychotherapy Networker.

Dr. McCollum and his wife Julia live in Northern Virginia with their two cats.
