New Students

F-1 Students (I-20)

  • Be accepted into an academic degree seeking program by the academic department and the Graduate School.
  • Show proof of having sufficient funds to cover all educational and living expenses for the first year; estimated to be at $31,000 per student, $4,000 per spouse and $1,500 for dependents. One or a combination of documents in the list below is accepted as proof:
    • Bank statement showing a balance of above, accompanied by an affidavit of support from sponsor
    • Assistantship agreement signed by the academic department
    • Written confirmation from the sponsoring institution of a scholarship, fellowship, or other type of funding. All documents must be original and less than 6 months old.
  • Be in legal status, eligible for transfer. For transfers; submit transfer-in form signed by current international student advisor and release the SEVIS record to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University Extended Campus Sites WAS214F01228003 only after acceptance to Virginia Tech. For changes in status; students must be in legal status and complete the I539. See Change of Status Section.

J-1 Scholars / Students (DS-2019)

  • Be invited by a Virginia Tech faculty member or department to come as an exchange visitor (student, research scholar, short-term scholar or professor)
  • Inviting department must complete and submit the Request Form DS-2019 for Visiting Scholars/Students to International Student Advisor at 703-538-8320 or mtelbisf@vt.edu.
  • If funding comes from outside Virginia Tech, proof of source, amount and duration of funding must be submitted in U.S. currency and English translation. Students must demonstrate $31,000 per year, or $2,600 per month as well as an additional $4000.00 per year for spouse and $1500 for each dependent. One or a combination of documents in the list below is accepted as proof:

  • Written confirmation from the sponsoring institution of a scholarship, fellowship, or other type of funding. All documents must be original and less than 6 months old, and translated into English

  • DS-156 Form/DS-158 Form/DS-157 Form
  • Valid Passport
  • SEVIS fee
  • Photographs (2x2)
  • SEVIS I-20 (F Students)
  • SEVIS DS-2019 (J Students / Scholars)
  • Graduate School acceptance letter for F1 or Departmental Invitation for J1
  • Sufficient funding (see above)

Students/Scholars are required to report and register immediately upon arrival with the international student advisor in at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church, Room 203. Please bring the following documents; passport, stamped I-20 or DS-2019 I-94. All students/scholars and their dependents are required to purchase medical insurance whether from abroad or from the States. Insurance is not included in your tuition.
