Virginia Tech students featured in Arlington County smart growth documentary

Arlington County, Virginia, sponsored the making of a documentary about the County’s smart growth efforts. The 52 minute film discusses the historical development of the County and its award-winning planning approach. Students from Virginia Tech and University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) who took part in a Virginia Tech Urban Affairs and Planning module about Transit-Oriented-Design and Arlington County were featured in the film. The module was led by two Urban Affairs and Planning faculty, Dr. Heike Mayer and Dr. Ralph Buehler.

UAP Faculty presents report on sustainable transport in Germany and the United States

Dr. Ralph Buehler has coauthored a report on policies/planning, travel behavior, and sustainable transportation in Germany and the United States, released by the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program during a recent event at the German Embassy in Washington, DC. There, Buehler presented the peer-reviewed report, “Making Transportation Sustainable: Insights from Germany,” which he authored with John Pucher, Rutgers University, and Dr. Uwe Kunert, German Institute of Economic Research, DIW Berlin, Germany.

UAP Faculty provide insight into Small Town Sustainability

Urban Affairs and Planning Professors Heike Mayer and Paul Knox have published their book, Small Town Sustainability: Economic, Social, and Environmental Innovation. Their book addresses the question of how small towns can meet the challenge of a fast-paced, globalized world. The authors' use case studies to introduce movements, programs, and strategies capable of effectively promoting local cultures, traditions, identities, and sustainability.
