Urban Land Institute/McNamara Internship at Virginia Tech
The Urban Land Institute/McNamara Internship is a one-year program open to second-year graduate students in architecture, building construction, landscape, architecture, urban and regional planning, public administration and policy, or other real estate related disciplines taking classes at Virginia Tech’s Alexandria campus.
The internship is funded through the generous support from Virginia Tech alumnus Donald J. McNamara.
The student chosen for this internship will have the unparalleled opportunity to work for the Urban Land Institute in Washington D.C. ULI staff are involved in exciting research and public policy activities, including sustainable development, smart growth, revitalization, urban design, and workforce housing. The current intern is 2nd year MURP student Andrew Smith.
Program benefits include a graduate research assistantship with stipend, tuition remission, a partial health benefit, ULI membership, and financial support for travel to ULI meetings.
Selection Criteria
The Urban Land Institute/McNamara Internship is a prestigious and competitive one-year program. A selection committee comprised of Donald J. McNamara, Daniel C. Van Epp, David Howard and Rachelle Levitt from ULI, and Rob Lang of Virginia Tech will evaluate the applications.
The Intern should be acknowledged as an individual who:
- Has a professional interest in the area of land use and real estate and is particularly interested in real estate development and/or finance.
- Shows leadership skills and promise in achieving an outstanding position in the realm of land use and real estate, urban and regional planning, or public administration and policy.
- Is willing to contribute to ULI’s goals and take part in various meetings and forums such as the fall meeting, Product Councils, and the Advisory Service Panel.
- Is willing to share the experience and knowledge gained from participation in the internship in a seminar setting with faculty, fellow students, and ULI staff.
Program Benefits

Eligibility & Application Requirements
Who is eligible?
- Candidates must be enrolled in a min. of 9 hours in the second year of a master’s program in architecture, building construction, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, public administration and policy, or other real estate related graduate program at VT.
- Candidates must possess a min. 3.0 GPA at time of application.
- Students at all Virginia Tech campuses are invited to apply, however the intern will expected to take classes at Virginia Tech’s National Capital Region campus.
