Route 50 BRT/TOD Corridor Study: Linking Land Use and Transit in Northern Virginia (Jessica Juriga, Brian Laverty, Gregory McFarland, Scott Rowe, Bridget Stesney, Benjamin Wiles, 2006)

Northern Virginia and the entire Washington, DC metropolitan region confront two critical policy challenges: the lack of affordable housing and greater transportation congestion. The region's quality of life and economic vitality will depend on effective, sustainable planning approaches that link land use, development, and transportation.

Design and development of a cohesive bus rapid transit (BRT)/transit-oriented development

(TOD) Initiative along Virginia's Route 50 corridor could become the centerpiece for a collaborative, regional strategy to address these two pressing problems. A team of graduate planning students from Virginia Tech's Alexandria Center spent the summer and fall of 2006 creating a vision for how regional policymakers could transform Route 50 into a vibrant BRT/TOD corridor.

By engaging in joint land use and transportation planning, a BRT system along Route 50 could generate new approaches for affordable, work force housing and spawn tremendous mixed-use development opportunities in the same manner as Arlington 's Ballston-Rosslyn corridor. A BRT system could also relieve congestion on Metro's Orange Line by delivering residents to destinations in Fairfax , Falls Church , Arlington , and eventually Washington , DC . Communities throughout the country already have BRT systems in place or on the drawing board that could guide the Route 50 initiative. Innovative designs and new transit technology can make BRT a fast, reliable, energy efficient transportation alternative.
