Studio Projects
UAP 5124, the Urban & Regional Planning Studio, is offered to students in both the Fall and Spring semesters. In the course, students apply planning strategies to solve urban problems that simulate those encountered in professional practice. After formulating strategies to implement their proposals, students present their findings. Completed studios have focused on the areas around two metro stations in
The studio class project, "Braddock Road Area Plan," won the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association's student project of the year award in 2004. The studio was taught by Louis Colombo, Research Associate Professor and Master Practitioner, with assistance by Tom Sanchez. Professional design oversight was contributed by Michael Watkins of the New Urbanism firm Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company. A copy of the plan can be viewed here.
The "East Falls Church Metro Area Plan," also taught by Professor Louis Colombo, offered in-depth urban design analysis of the area with sections on affordable housing and neighborhood-based retail development. Architect Geoffrey Ferrell assisted the studio class. Completed in May 2004, the plan also won the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association's student project of the year award in 2005.

The Fall 2005 Studio class, taught by Geoff Ferrell and Mary Madden of Ferrell Madden Associates, focused on creating a town center template for Stafford County, Virginia. The final report, Strategies for Town Centers in Stafford County, can be viewed here.
