How Do I Get Around In The Washington D.C. Area?
If you do not have a car, there are still plenty of way's to traverse the nation's capital. Below are a few different options you can choose from to help you get around the area.
Metrorail and Metrobus
The Washington Meropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) provides both Metrorail and Metrobus service throughout the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Maryland. Metro operates both Metrorail and Metrobus services from 5 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to midnight on weekends. Fees for both services vary based on how many stops you travel and vary during peak and off-peak hours. More information on each Metro service can be found on their respective websites:
- Fairfax Connector provides bus service throughout Fairfax County and to Metro stations on the Orange, Blue, Yellow and Silver lines.
- Loudoun County Transit (LCT) operates rush hour service from park and ride lots in Loudoun to destinations in Fairfax County, Arlington County and Washington, D.C. LCT also provides service from West Falls Church Metro to employment sites in eastern Loudoun County. Fixed-route bus service is also available in Leesburg.
Walking and Biking
Many of the centers in the National Capital Region are located within walking distance of housing and shopping plazas. If you choose to use a bicycle as your mode of transportation, both the Northern Virginia Center and Arlington Research have bicycle racks located outside each building.
If you plan on taking long trips around the area, bicycles can be rented from Capital Bikeshare at one of their many locations throughout Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland.
Taxi and Car Services
Similar to taxi's, car services such as Uber and Lyft are smartphone applications that provide on-demand service that connects passengers to drivers. Both services require you to have a iOS or Android smartphone and the application of the service installed on it.
