Connecting to Wireless

Virginia Tech operates two wireless networks named "VirginiaTech" and "eduroam".  Below are instructions on how to connect to both wireless networks.  In person help with connecting to the wireless networks is also available in the NVC Library on the first floor of the Northern Virginia Center.

VirginiaTech (Guest Wireless)

Who can use it? - Guest, Adjunct Faculty, Contractors, Conference Attendies, Vendors, People who are having trouble connecting to eduroam.

Login to VirginiaTech wireless as a Guest / Adjunct Faculty:

(Guest login’s are only active for 24hrs and can only be used on two devices at once.  After 24hrs you will need to re-create your guest wireless account)

  • Open the wireless settings on your device and select “VirginiaTech” access point.
  • Open a web browser and it should take you to the VirginiaTech wireless splash page.
  • If the VirginiaTech splash page doesn’t open, try navigating to another website and the splash page should load or click on this link: https://guestmanager.cns.vt.edu/guest/launch.php
  • Click on the Guest link.
  • Click on the “Create a new guest wireless account” button.
  • Type in your Name, Mobile Number, and any Email address you have in the appropriate text boxes, then click on the Register button.
  • You will be taken to the login screen, for the username type in your email address, the password will be texted to your mobile phone.  If you didn't receive a text message please call Virginia Tech 4Help at 540-231-4357.
  • If you are unable to receive SMS text messages, please call Virginia Tech 4Help at 540-231-4357 to have a guest wireless account created for you.

 

Login to VirginiaTech wireless as a Student:
  • Open the wireless settings on your device and select “VirginiaTech” access point.
  • Open a web browser and it should take you to the VirginiaTech wireless splash page.
  • If the VirginiaTech splash page doesn’t open, try navigating to another website and the splash page should load or click on this link: https://guestmanager.cns.vt.edu/guest/launch.php
  • Click on Student/Faculty/Staff link.
  • At the bottom of the page in the area labeled “Can’t connect to eduroam?” click on the link labeled “try connecting to VirginiaTech”.
  • Then type in your PID and Network Password to login to VirginiaTech wireless.  If you don’t know your Network Password, go here: https://accounts.it.vt.edu/myaccounts/network/show_password to generate or view it.

 

Eduroam

Who can use it? - Students, Faculty, and Staff.  Eduroam is a paid service that is included in student fees and paid for with department funds for faculty and staff.

Students Before You Connect to Eduroam - Check to see if you have access to connect to Eduroam.  Go to https://accounts.it.vt.edu/ and login with your VT login. 

  • Once logged in click on "Network Access" link in the left column. 
  • On the right side of the webpage there will be a box labeled "Network Services". 
  • In that box look for "WIRELESS LAN SERVICE", if it says Yes next to that text then you can access Eduroam, follow the instructions below. 
  • If it says No next to "WIRELESS LAN SERVICE" then you will need to contact VT 4Help (540-231-4357) to resolve the issue.

You will need a VT “Network Password” in order to connect to the center’s Eduroam wireless service.   The Network Password is NOT the same as your PID password.  You will also need to have the ability to make setting changes on your wirless device to install a security certificate.

To get your network password:
  • Open the wireless settings on your device and select “VirginiaTech” access point.
  • Open a web browser and go to:  https://accounts.it.vt.edu/myaccounts/network/show_password
  • Login using your VT PID and PID password.
  • If you haven’t generated a network password, click on the button labeled “Generate New Password
  • If you have generated a network password it will be displayed on the screen.
  • After you click on the generate new password button your network password will be displayed.
  • Network password example: abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop (the dashes are apart of the password)

 

Login to Eduroam:
  • Open the wireless settings on your device and select “eduroam” access point.
  • When prompted for a login type in:
    • Username: Your VT Email address, example: PID@vt.edu
    • Password:  Your network password
  • When prompted to install a security certificate click on Accept or Continue button.
  • You will need administrator access on your computer to install the certificate.
  • Once installed, you will be connected to the eduroam wireless service.

If you have problems connecting to eduroam, try connecting to VirginiaTech wireless.
